We don’t want two kids and a wife
I don’t want a job, I just want a life
Sometimes the underdogs rise and the mighty fall
These lyrics from "American Dream" by MKTO tell us how this band, and part of the new generation, think about the American Dream. It states that the artists (representing the new generation) are trying to form their own dream. They don't want to define their life by family and a job, they want to live life to the fullest, and the way they want to. The last line in this section could be interpreted as how they hope the social and economic classes change. The "underdogs" could be the middle and lower classes, and the "mighty" as the few people who have a lot of wealth. But then again, MKTO doesn't tell us what they want us to take away from the song, it is for our own interpretation.

Duane Hanson created a sculpture collection "Sculptures of the American Dream". In this collection he shows consumerism and the ugly side of American culture. These realistic wax figures of people are meant to show what some people in modern America look like. "The executive" should look familiar if you have traveled to the Toledo Museum of Art. The extremely life-like sculptures are meant to show America's social and political issues. |
Similar to Duane Hanson, Mike Mella focused on the ugly side of America, but mostly American consumerism. Mike Mella also is a photographer, not a sculptor, so his artwork is interestingly different. Check it out at the link above.
